What is a Blanco Tequila?
While it can go by a variety of names, Blanco Tequila is the classic variety that you can't go wrong with (In moderation). Blanco Tequila is classified as Tequila that has been unaged, or only barrel rested for a brief period of time (less than 60 days). For other types of Tequilas, the barrel aging process contributes additional flavoring and coloring to the spirit. In the absence of aging, Blanco Tequilas represent one of the purest forms of Tequilas (assuming it's additive free). What Does a Blanco Tequila Taste like?
Without the barrel aging, Blanco Tequilas are generally less appealing to new drinkers compared to Añejos or Reposados. Blanco Tequilas are known for having more alcohol forward notes, that give it a harsh reputation. Outside of this connotation however, Blanco Tequilas can offer distinct flavors like cracked pepper, agave, mint, or even vegetal notes. Seasoned connoisseurs will appreciate quality Blanco Tequilas neat, or over a large ice cube, while those less accustomed generally prefer to mix Blanco Tequilas into a Margarita, or similar cocktail.
What Cocktails Can be made with Blanco Tequila?
Blanco Tequilas are an excellent spirit to craft into cocktails. Can Blanco Tequila be used for cooking?
Yes of course! Blanco Tequila can enhance a variety of dishes, like Tequila lime chicken, salsas, and even desserts. Typically recipes will cook away any of the alcohol content, and leave flavors from the Blanco Tequila.
How is Blanco Tequila made?
Just like other types of Tequila, Blanco Tequila starts it's journey as Blue Weber Agave. These special plants from select regions of Mexico are harvested and cooked to extract their tasty sugars for fermentation and distillation into the spirit we know as Tequila. Each brand has their own ways of harvesting, cooking, juicing, fermenting, and distilling Tequila. After distillation Tequila Blanco is typically bottled immediately. Sometimes it is barrel rested for a brief period of less than 60 days. This lack of aging is what differentiates a Blanco Tequila from it's counterparts.
How long does it take to make Blanco Tequila?
Making any type of Tequila is a long process, which starts with the Agave plant. Made from specifically Blue Weber Agave Tequiliana, plants can take from 7-14 years to mature depending on a variety of factors. After harvesting and transport, it can take about a month to finish production.
How do you Drink Blanco Tequila?
Blanco, Plata, or Silver Tequila can be drank in almost any way. Being one of the most versatile categories of the spirit, Blanco Tequilas can be used to make cocktails, take shots, or just sip! While it's not typically for the beginner many enjoy a Blanco Tequila neat, or over a large ice cube.
Is Plata or Silver the same as Blanco?
Basically. Some brands prefer to using these words instead of Blanco, or when they have multiple Tequilas in this category. Brands sometimes also use Plata or Silver instead of Blanco when they have one bottle that is 100% agave, and another that is not.
Is a Cristalino a Blanco Tequila?
While it does have a clear color and similar appearance, typically a Cristalino is aged for more than 2 months which disqualifies it. Cristalinos are not yet an officially recognized class of Tequilas.
